Product Description

Katsina by Kevin Quanimptewa, Hopi Carver Measurements: 4″ high x 1 3/4″ wide

The Snow Maiden Katsina appears during Niman or Home Dance, the final katsina ceremony of the year when the katsinam return home. She represents snow, as she is pure white in appearance. She is often seen during the Niman ceremony kneeling in the center of the katsina dancers playing a gourd rasps. During this ceremony the katsinam pray for the upcoming cold weather, in hopes that it brings plenty of moisture to prepare the soil for the next planting season.
